I decided to research different styles of character designs for my chosen target audience. I also decided to make some sketches in different styles to find out which one I like the most, and if it's fitting my initial story.

This is my initial story idea, its still unrefined but hopefully it tells a bit about the characters, and what they might look like.
Many years ago God Poseidon had in possession a mysterious and powerful object that could change the world by turning the land of entire planet to sea. Before Poseidon got to use it and take over the world the artefact got stolen by cunning pirates, who risked their life to protect the human race.
One night a young boy gets awaken by a loud noise in his house, when he gets to the source of the noise in the cellar he discovers a very old chest with a broken lock. Inside the chest he finds a letter that turns out to be written by boy's great grandfather. The letter was detailing what was kept in the chest and how important it is to protect it. After realising how powerful the relic was he decides to go onto a sea adventure to get back the object. Luckily for the boy his great grandfather, left him a magical crystal ball, which holds one in a kind mythic creature, that is going to become boy's companion, and friend.
Hero- A young boy about age 16, who's great grandfather was a pirate and stole an object that belonged to the god of the sea. The boy has a weakness of not being able to swim which makes him worried that he wont be able to stand up to the task of stealing from the Poseidon.
Side Kick- A mythical creature enclosed in a magic crystal ball. The creature has two incarnations one is of a sea horse inside the ball, and the second of a full size mythical half horse half fish monster, the seahorse will only transform when the boy is in serious trouble.
Villain- God of the Sea, Poseidon who wants to rule the world by turning all of the land into water...

I have researched into different mythic monsters and gods, in particular I'm interested in the sea creatures that can link with the 'Pirate' theme. I love the image of the mythic sea horse, and I think it would be very interesting to give him a fun personality. I have also looked at existing mythic characters like Disney’s ‘Hercules’ animated film.

I have researched existing images of pirates, and how they are interpreted by other people, to give me inspiration to create my own character. At the first look it's noticeable that all of them have nearly the same type of clothing, and prop(saber/ gun), which helps me to define a generic image of a pirate.

This week we had an introduction to our new project which is Character Design. Each one of us has been given two different words to base our work on. I got words: 'Mythic' and 'Pirate', to create three characters a hero, side kick and a villain. I was very happy to find out what words I got as I very much enjoy the mythology topic and I love pirate movies, combining those two has made me extremely excited for the project. (:
Thinking about what I could do I realized that I could either create a mythic creature like a minotaur or a Greek God having pirate adventures, or pirates experiencing a mythic voyage(maybe like in 'The Odyssey' )
The wide range of possibilities is giving me an opportunity to create nearly everything. The next stage of the project will be researching existing mythic and pirate creatures, which will help me to choose what I find the most interesting, and narrowing the whole range of ideas into one.
The meaning of:
mythic - based on or told of in traditional stories; lacking factual basis or historical validity like "mythical centaurs" or "the fabulous unicorn"
pirate - someone who robs at sea or plunders the land from the sea without having a commission from any sovereign nation.
